The Chemistry Department, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, held a course entitled “Fasting and Insulin: A Journey Towards Hormonal Balance.” The course, presented by Professors Duaa Rahman Ibrahim, Lama Ismail Ibrahim, and Harir Abdel Nasser, covered several topics, including a theoretical perspective on the importance of insulin and its relationship to blood sugar levels and how fasting affects it. The course also addressed the different types of fasting, including intermittent fasting, medical fasting, and Ramadan fasting. The course also explored the resulting physiological changes, including reduced insulin secretion and increased cell sensitivity, which supports the body’s metabolic health. The practical aspect included taking blood samples from fasting individuals, under the supervision of Ms. Duaa Rahman Ibrahim, to test their blood sugar levels and compare them with those of those not fasting to determine the effects of fasting on blood sugar levels. The course concluded with tips and advice for making the most of fasting during the holy month and maintaining normal insulin levels to prevent insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, while maintaining overall health.
