In a serious academic atmosphere and in-depth intellectual discussions, the College of Islamic Sciences at Al-Iraqia University  discussed a master’s thesis entitled:
“The Intellectual Views of Orientalist Hamilton Gibb on Islamic Sciences.” The thesis was presented by researcher Abdullah Akram Abdullah, under the supervision of Professor Saddam Hussein Kazim and Assistant Professor Abdullah Hamoud Sharmout.
The thesis critically and analytically examined the most prominent ideas of British Orientalist Hamilton Gibb regarding the Holy Quran, Islamic jurisprudence, Sufism, and theology. It focused on his sources and approach to reading Islamic heritage, comparing his views with those of Muslim scholars, in an attempt to understand the extent to which he was influenced by the Western academic environment.
The discussion committee consisted of Professor Salam Majeed Fakher as Chairman, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Sabah Arif as a member, and Lecturer Dr. Salam Arsinan Ahmed as a member. Assistant Professor Dr. Saddam Hussein Kazim and Assistant Professor Dr. Abdullah Hamoud Sharmout served as the thesis supervisors. The thesis sought to combine a thorough knowledge of Islamic sciences with the tools of sound academic analysis, presenting a critical intellectual model in the field of Orientalist studies.
